Interior Decor Tips

At Vacation Rentals On-Line, we are glad to share some interior décor tips from the guidelines we utilize.  As well as our own standards of design established through years of experience.  Here are some examples of the guidelines.  However, every property is different, and there will be instances when it makes sense to deviate slightly from these measures.

Examples Of Our Guidelines

General Standards and Measurements
  • 36” For passage in major traffic areas
  • 30” From top of dining table to bottom of light fixture
  • 24” Space on either side of the bed
Accessorizing
  • Work in odd numbers 1,3,5, or 7 (one large piece can stand on its own)
  • Use color three or more times in a room as an accent
  • Use the 70-20-10 rule for color- 70% lightest color, 20% of the middle color and 10% of the darkest color, for more impact reverse this ratio
Texture
  • Use texture to add style and visual interest to pillows, walls, fabrics, and accessories
  • Silk greenery adds color, dimension, and texture. Large plants can and softens the lines of a room and break up a big open space
  • Texture in items such as baskets, wrought iron, and plates offers differing elements to a room
Lighting
  • Task lighting is functional and used in specific places for reading, cooking, etc.
  • Using three light sources in a room creates a lighting triangle and will sufficiently illuminate the entire space
  • Lamps should be the proper size and scale as they relate to the furniture around them
Scale and Balance
  • Pay attention to the heights of upholstered pieces in relation to each other
  • Look at the height of upholstered pieces in relation to tables
  • Improper scale can be built up between two pieces with lamps, artwork, accessories
Hanging Artwork
  • Most artwork is hung too high, keep in mind most artwork in the home is viewed from a seated position
  • Artwork in a hallway should be hung at eye level from a standing position (approx. 60” from the floor to the center of the picture or grouping)
  • When hanging artwork above a sofa, table or buffet, relate the artwork to the piece of furniture it is with- generally 6”-9” above
